I like to read articles on when Faith and Science clash. But I've read two articles this evening that really just get me mad. Ok, so it's not so much the articles. It's the comments. Several reviewers compared Fundamental Christianity to the TALIBAN! Really? The fundamentalists that I know are not trying to destroy this country and all it stands for. In fact, they are some of the most patriotic people I know. Some to the point of borderline idolatry in the cult of America. In church.
In a recent survey of almost 1000 American High School Biology teachers, 13% of them teach Creationism or intelligent design in addition to Evolution. NOT instead of. IN ADDITION. Some reviewers claimed that these 13% should loose their teaching license. Isn't that a bit like saying you cannot EVER read the Bible in schools, even if you read the Qu'ran or other holy books?
Others claimed that these teachers and the belief in creation/intelligent design are the sole reason America is falling behind in science test scores. "China doesn't teach Creationism." China doesn't teach a lot of things. China doesn't teach that the Tienanmen Square Massacre occurred. I would hazard a guess that these same people would be appalled if an American teacher refused to teach it. But, that's right. Double standards are ok when it comes to the "educated elite." And science.
Don't you want your children to be independent and critical thinkers who do not swallow everything ever told them? If so, present both sides of the argument. Or is that your plan? A generation of mindless boobs who cannot or will not think for themselves? Cause from where I sit, it's working.
